3 Key Elements Every Small Home Needs to Be Comfortable

Small homes offer a multitude of attractive benefits such as a significantly lower price tag than their 2000-square-foot counterparts, less maintenance and upkeep, and minimalist living. However, small homes may be overly romanticized on television programs, so it’s important to know what it really takes to be comfortable and thrive in a smaller space. Three key elements to making your small home comfortable are flow of air, convenience of movement and sufficient storage.

Everything that increases air moisture in a regular home (showering, cooking, or even just breathing) is significantly magnified in a tiny home, and too much moisture can lead to mold and damage. This is why proper ventilation is a must for comfortable living. It’s important for your home to be airtight, since any cracks or gaps can have a noticeable effect on efficiency. Of course, when the weather is lovely, you can simply open the windows. This isn’t always feasible, though. To circulate fresh air, there are multiple ventilation systems designed for tiny homes. You should also consider a classic gable roof design. This allows better moisture dispersion than flatter roofs do.

Lines of Movement

This may seem obvious, but there should be clear pathways in your residence. Ease of movement throughout your home is a vital consideration. This isn’t usually a factor in the purchase of a residence, but for a small home it ought to be a priority. It would be pretty miserable to have to twist your body and step over things just to get around the house. Not only is it uncomfortable, but it poses safety risks as well. For example, bunched up rugs and carpets are a major cause of slip-and-fall accidents.

Creative Storage

Even if you’re an expert organizer, your first step to creative storage in a tiny home is to get rid of everything you don’t really require. It probably won’t fit anyway. After all, small-house living is a commitment to a minimalist lifestyle. However, everyone has needs, and there are many creative storage ideas you can utilize to maximize the space in your small home. Whether you store above in storage lofts or below under the floors, your options are more expansive than your square footage would lead you to believe.

Fortunately, these three elements aren’t all that difficult to accomplish with a little planning. There are loads of online resources and expert consultants to help you along the way when the solution isn’t obvious. Just remember that your small home is meant to be cozy rather than uncomfortable.
